How to Stop Telemarketers Permanently (Step-by-Step)

Published: May 2026

Is your phone constantly ringing with "Spam Risk" or unknown numbers? Your phone number was likely sold to a data broker. Here is exactly how to stop the noise and regain your privacy.

1. The National Do Not Call Registry

If you live in the United States, your first step is to register your phone number at donotcall.gov. It takes 31 days for the registry to take full effect. While this will not stop illegal scammers overseas, it will stop legitimate domestic companies from cold-calling you.

2. Enable Carrier-Level Blocking

All major cell phone carriers now offer free spam blocking apps. Download AT&T ActiveArmor, T-Mobile Scam Shield, or Verizon Call Filter depending on your provider. These apps intercept known scam calls before your phone even rings.

3. "Silence Unknown Callers"

If you are being severely harassed, both iOS and Android have a nuclear option. Go to your phone settings and enable "Silence Unknown Callers." If a number is not saved in your contacts, the call will immediately go to voicemail. Legitimate callers will leave a message.

4. Identify the Persistent Callers

If a specific number keeps calling and leaving silent voicemails, you need to identify who owns the line. Do not call them back, as this signals to them that your line is active.
